OK, I have a wiki...now what?
You need to create user accounts for the people who will be allowed to edit your wiki. A user must be logged-in to the wiki server to edit pages. User accounts are specific to your wiki instance only--they will not work on other wikis. Please use the person's UM Directory ID as an easy-to-remember convention. See below for instructions on how to create users.
To learn how to build and use your wiki, see How to - Quick Tips.
How do I create a user?
Click Special Pages at the bottom left of the screen. Now click Log in / create an account. When creating an account, please use the person's directory id as an easy-to-remember convention. The access rights for users can be modified by going to Special Pages, and clicking User rights management under Restricted special pages.
Can I create accounts for non-umd users?
Yes, but make sure they are engaged in legitmate umd academic purposes, otherwise the access would be inappropriate.
How do I modify user rights for accounts I've created?
The access rights for users can be modified by going to Special Pages, and clicking User rights management under Restricted special pages. Enter the user's acccount ID, and click Edit User Groups button. Next, click/highlight the desired right(s) listed under Available groups, and click the Save User Groups button.
Can I delete a user once created?
No, the best solution is to keep the user ID and remove all its rights.
I'm having a problem with the wiki, who do I notify?
If you experience problems with the wiki server, send a detailed description to the learningtools@umd.edu email list.
How do I customize my wiki?
Here are some options:
Add a new page
Click the edit tab at the top of an exiting page; then type the title of the new page with double brackets at the beginning and end (see below). Once you save the edits, the title will become a link to a new blank wiki page. Initially, the text will be red, indicating the page is blank.

Change the title of the main page from "Main Page"
Yes, you will need to create a new wiki page with the name you want, then make it your top level default page by following the instructions in the MediaWiki FAQ. Basically, login with your sysop account, type MediaWiki:Mainpage in the search field, then edit the page to indicate the new top level default page.
Note: If you already have material on the default Main Page you will need to copy it to the new default main page. To do this,
- first click Edit on the current "Main Page,"
- copy the wiki markup for the page;
- create the new default main page, and
- then paste the markup it into the new default page.
